However I do want clarify some things about ages. First I would say the avergae age for getting hired as a police officer is like 25 to 35. 23 is actully on the younger end. If you do chose to be a security guard and go to the police academy and become a officer, don't worry about being looked down on for being young and without military experience. The way you carry youself on the job will ear you respect. There will be some prior military guys that act like fools and young 21 year old guys with little job experience do really well because they know how to get along with people and do the police job well. It is not difficult to get into law enforcement without military background. Many have it, but not all. Also 23 is not too old for the military. Especially not the way the economy is, people are going into the military are much older now and other recruits will look up to your for guidance. Either of your plans is good so you should see where you can get started at first. If you are able to get hired on as a security guard and volunteer or even paid EMT, then do so. If those jobns aren;t available then speak to a recruiter about going into the military. If both were readily availalble, I would go to the police academy as this seems to be your ulitmate goal, even after the military. So why not just get started on it earlier. Either branch of the Army or Navy will help you brush up on firearms and martial arts. they do have military combatives. Its up to you though. If you had a tertiary qualification by going to University to obtain a criminal justice or psychology certification; you might consider entering federal law enforcement, since for most people the Average age of entry to organisations such as the FBI is between 24 and 27. After of which most of my life consisted of the Information Technology industry and spent the last 8 years or so re-evaluating my position and going back to study again. Because of so many factors both government, work force and especially the Global Financial Crisis , I've had to rethink where I should be and since I've had an interest in serving my country in the armed forces unfortunately my parents discouraged it (not happy with that) and as such was interested in law enforcement also. I guess perhaps you have it lucky, as I am not physically fit or muscular or even have firearms and martial arts experience. I am trying to get myself physically fit though even at my age. I believe it makes no difference which option you go with, because you are doing something to serve your country in the honesty of protecting your community. Since I have a physical disability as I am not fit; I have also re-evaluated which areas I will be best suited within federal law enforcement and as such have taken the opportunities to undergo the critique of the application process. Having all of those qualities and traits that you have at your age is probably better for local law enforcement; as federal law enforcement and other policing agencies those things are just icing on the cake; because you will have to go through psychoanalytic interviews with evaluation processes, intelligence tests; very invasive background checks; more interviews, exercises with teams and so forth. I've gone through this and its necessary and very time consuming especially for the agency trying to find out what sort of person you are and whether you can be trusted. Age has nothing to do with joining either one; its just a stereotype of thinking that has lingered through time that you or a small portion of people perceive.
