Back three years ago I began taking Tae Kwon Do lessons at this school by me. I didn’t think much of it until I began gradually realizing how the school works and its stupid students. This is how good I am at Tae Kwon Do. Try and guess which belt I am.
My sidekicks lack power. My back kicks have no power. I can’t do a back wheel kick or hook kick properly. I don’t have any speed or swiftness in my movements. I can’t really do the splits, so all my high kicks reach outward rather than upward.
Can you guess what belt I am ? Well, you’re probably guessing some low belt like white or yellow. You’re WRONG ! I’m a brown-stripe belt. Yep, that’s right almost a black belt and suck completely. Part of this I feel are the teachers faults who are these young guys recruited from Korea and they couldn’t care less about what you do. This actually happened. I was practicing a jumping front snap kick one time and I couldn’t get it right and the instructor literally said ‘whatever’ and walked away. The classes suck. We usually start out by doing relay races sometimes, then work on useless forms. Then board breaking. This is where another topic comes in. I have seen this numerous times and it just gets me so mad. Every time someone goes to kick the instructor hurls the board towards your feet so it breaks easier ? I’ve seen them do this and I’m the only one catching on. Sometimes they try to bend it with their hands. We use the garbage plastic snap together boards. Also I’ve noticed how they could care less about how you’re improvements are. This is also one of those summer camp garbage schools. I’ve had it ! Do think I should give up martial arts, cause that’s where its heading to. Don’t suggest MMA, cause I’m only interested in martial arts that are meant for a life or death situation, not a competition.
I may as also tell you that there appear to be several young black belts in my class who suck. They’re little kids. Maybe 7 or 8 years old. Shouldn’t they be able to take apart 25 men if belts are that great ?!!!??? Also I was sparring with this other brown-stripe belt and I kicked his elbow (my kicks are like wind they’re so weak) and he started crying. Not tiny little tears, but a RIVER ! I don’t know what to do.
This school also teaches Hapkido which is only allowed for teenagers and up. Should I try that ? Its just self-defense, no forms. I think I’ll quit. Martial arts are too hard when no one’s there to help you.
A certain style cannot just defeat another oppenent. But, how one is trained is all that matters.
It looks like you are in a school that is not teaching properly. All the skills you mentioned not being good at are not important ones anyway. High kicks are not needed. Neither is spinning back kicks, … What is needed is good technique. It sounds like that is not being taught. I smell a Mcdojo. If you are training enough, then it is the school that is the problem, not you. If you are not training as you should be, then it is both the school and you that are at fault. After three years, you should at least have some good basic techniques. I’d look at what you are doing to improve, how much practice you do both in class and more importantly, outside of class. Then you should consider if the school is teaching as they should be. That seems to be the problem. If the school is that bad, then joining the Hapkido class there is not going to fix the problem. Look into another school or style. Try to find a non commercial class such as those at YMCA, recreation centers, and community colleges.
Best of Luck!
