Do DI’s in Marine Corps boot camp still punch/kick recruits and verbally abuse them?

I was at Parris Island just after Vietnam had ended (’75)and they were not technically "allowed" to punch or hit us, but I saw one smartass get dropped with a great spin kick by a DI that was obviously a black belt (I later become a brown belt), and I personally got punched in the gut pretty hard once. they even told us they were not allowed to hit us but it was just an unwritten code after the first few weeks once they had turned you that no one would report it and even if someone did none of the other recruits would report seeing anything. We also had a top recruit (he was about to make guide) freak and jump off the 3rd floor of of stairwell down to the tarmac, he was hauled away in an ambulance, we never heard what happened to him. Another time a DI explained how to slit your wrists to kill yourself if the stress got too much for us…he said slice up the arm…if you just cut across the wrist all you’ll do is make a mess in the head. Just Curious if Marine Corps boot camp has kept its "edge" after all these years.

I went to Parris Island a few years before you. There was plenty of physical abuse although even then it was not allowed. As I remember it though, the mental part of boot camp was much more effective.
Being isolated Parris Island allowed DI’s to get much more physical then their San Diego counterparts. Going to school in MCRD in San Diego, I never saw any physical abuse toward recruits (rumor was air traffic controllers at SD airport could see them). I did witness a particularly cruel Christmas display. San Diego recruits marching with footlockers overhead singing Jingle Bells.
I’m sure at San Diego, physical abuse was kept out of sight, and far less then at Parris Island. Even so, there was no difference I could see in Marines from one MCRD to the other.
For that reason, I’m confident Marine Corps DI’s have found ways to keep that "edge" we all recall and love.

NROTC Scholarship at University of Washington?

I’m planning to enroll NROTC at University of Washington or Oregon State University.
1st Choice: Aeronautical Engineering at University of Washington.
2nd Choice: Nuclear Engineering at Oregon State University.
I had my interview with the Chief Petty Officer (E-7) at the Navy local recruiting office. He gave his original letter of recommendation to me before he faxed it. I got a 5/5 overall report (academic, leadership, sports, etc),that is the maximum any NROTC candidate can receive from the interviewer.
I would think my application is in this January selection board.
3.78 Unweighted GPA, 90% of my classes are honors and AP courses.If It is weighted, I would estimate it’ll be around 4.6.
Just saw my ACT from their website.
Math: 25, Reading: 23, Science: 22, English:20 ( I personally think those are horrible number in all category, but I can’t retake it again since this is the December ACT, so If I receive the scholarship, it would be a "miracle" from my perspective).
Speak, Write and Read Vietnamese fluently.
Honors Roll for 4 years.
National Honor Society.
Captain Soccer Team for 2 years.
Varsity Football.
Varsity Track & Field.
Black Belt Vietnamese Martial Art.
Enroll in Army JROTC for 4 years (position doesn’t matter), all they care is early interest in the military.
Lots of community service hours, especially in Salvation Army and Meals on Wheel (which I take pride doing the best I can to provide healthy meals to low-income family and seniors).
Outstanding letters of recommendation from my councilor, AP Calculus teacher/National Honor Society and Football Coach. All are in top 10% and top 1%.
If one is in JROTC, it is CRITICAL to have your commander/ Senior Army Instructor’s letter of recommendation, because they want to know how well one do in leadership class. Mine got all top 1%, except involvement in JROTC activities, which I got top 10%. My JROTC SAI is West Point grad, his recommendation alone is powerful, from the NROTC regional coordinator in Portland , Oregon.
But this one would give me a big advantage over the majority of the applicant. I’m a naturalized citizen and have been here a little more than 4 years, for all the of teacher that know me, they are shocked of how well I do in class compare to my peers, especially in AP classes.
My main reason to go to NROTC is to serve my country, to protect and defend America from her enemies. I will unquestionably put my life to preserve the "American dreams" for others, just like me today. The interview asked me how will I treat him if I’m his commanding officer, I gave him my honest reponse: " I will treat you and other under my command as of all of you are my biological brothers, with love, respect, dignity and honor".
By the way, I received a congressional nomination to Annapolis. Do you think it would help my application if i would fax it along with my application?
What do you guys think of my statistics and commitment to the Navy and this country?
Please give me your honest advices.

Van, honestly – what do you want to be told?

You certainly sound like you’ve got it all going on. No one can question your dedication, and you’ve obviously adopted this country at least as much as this country has adopted you. I can’t imagine that there will be enough other students with equally compelling "histories" to raise any question that you’ll receive the ROTC scholarship that you applied for. You’ve got everything but the top-range ACT scores – and I don’t mean to denigrate the US military, but I think it’s safe to say that the average ROTC scholarship applicant doesn’t have extraordinary standardized test scores. I think you’re going to stand out as one of their brightest applicants.

You’ve got incredible academics, your reviewers all rave about you, you’ve done significant community service, you’re in outstanding physical condition, you’ve served in positions of leadership – what exactly are you asking? Do you expect someone to find some disqualifying flaw in your resumé?

I think the Navy could use a lot more candidates like you – and frankly, it sounds like you have the dedication and commitment to succeed at whatever you set your mind to.

I wish you the very best of luck in all of your future endeavors.

“Obligation of Carry” by Nutnfancy

Deciding to be an armed, licensed civilian is serious business. Mature, sound judgment and preparation in every facet of this decision must be exercised. And doing so is not cheap, its not convenient, it requires a perishable skill set, and its complicated by many legalities. Also expect you, the armed civilian, to be completely misrepresented by the media, lambasted and characterized as a fringe, paranoid, and borderline un-safe person. Hogwash. But that flak you’ll get does not change the realities of you choosing to be legally armed. Nutnfancy says YOU do incur an “Obligation of Carry” if you decide to walk society as a CCW (Concealed Carry Weapon) or CCP (Pistol) individual. You absolutely must have your gun on you to the maximum extent possible…no joke. Yes there are places where being armed is illegal and inappropriate but there are lot of places where it is not. In fact most places, at least in the US. In this video Nutnfancy addresses the biggest folly of most guys and gals who have gone to the effort of licensing and buying their pistol for legal carry: they just do not carry it. Why is that? Chances are they have chosen a bad system (Nutnfancy term) of carry. Perhaps a bulky or heavy gun that requires special dress and carriage that rapidly becomes so taxing that its soon left at home. I’ve seen this phenomena MANY times over many years: big talk about a big gun but soon that big gun is left at home and by doing so that CCW holder has abandoned his responsibility as a sheep dog keeping himself and good people safe. I advocate carrying as big a gun as you can but you MUST carry it as much as possible. And yes, there are bad people who have done (and could do) bad things to yourself and the innocent people around you. The main focus of this video is another mass shooting by such an individual. Defending against a murdering bad guy in a public place is serious business and it requires preparation, mental exactitude, and commitment. And it is fraught with lots of serious, pressured judgments and perhaps legal and civil implications (not discussed). But the good sheep of the world, along with you and your family, do indeed merit defense. And since you will be there right along with these people, threatened with death in such a scenario, that might be YOUR calling that day as an armed, responsible civilian. And do not think the police can get there in time and save these lives; they most often will not despite their best efforts (witness Trolley Square UT, Colorado Springs CO, Stockton CA, Lubys Killen TX, Virginia Tech VA shootings). And often when they do, they still have to formulate their response…s ometimes even as the shootings continue (Columbine). If you are not willing to fulfill the obligation of carry, for you, your friends, your family, and all good people nearby you, then you would be better served NOT getting your carry permit and NOT carrying. You will save lots of hassle and money in the process and the end result for society will be the same. However if you join our ranks, then do so with a commitment. A commitment to find a carry system that will works for you 24/7, 365 in all appropriate places. It might just be that workable system is a .380, .38 Special, .32, or even a .25 auto pistol. So be it. At least you will be armed and with that armament you will have some options. It doesn’t matter how cool, how powerful, how much firepower your wonder gun has if its sitting in the gun safe at home when that madman decides to kill good people that day. And there you’ll be caught flatfooted watching people die. So what’s your FIRST Obligation of Carry? Having it with you. It can save lives…period.
