At 23 years of age I do not see myself as too old to be a Cop but I do see myself as too old to join the Military since most of them are 18 year old boys directly out of high school. I have to plans of action and they both have their pro’s and con’s.

Plan A. serve as a Security Guard and as a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician and enter a Police Academy and graduate as an Officer of the Law. The greatest pro of this option is that I will gian Experience as a Cop much earlier on in life than other Police Officers by being recruited at the younger end of the 21-35 preferred age range. The greatest con would be that I might get looked down upon by other Officers in my Department who are ex-Military for the fact that I did not sign up and serve on the National and Federal level when I could have. Is it difficult to be a Cop without a solid Military background? Option B I will join the Military if Uncle Sam is still willing to take me at my age, Preferable the US Army or Navy. My greatest pro to this option will be having the pride of serving the Western World and protecting it from terrorist threats while gaining recognition for my service. the greatest con is that the more time I spend in the Military the more time I lose to get recruited by the Police Force and that I could go from going to the very beginning of the desired age range to the very end if the Military decides to keep me for ten years. In short, I could go from prime select to bottom of the barrel and I am at prime select now.

Regardless if I am in the Army or Navy, or serving as a civilian Security Guard and EMT, I just have a burning desire to serve and protect those in need to the best of my ability, not for the title of hero but for my desire to help others. I am 23 years of age, fit, healthy, muscular, and have worlds of experience with both Martial Arts and firearms. I have a Black Belt in both Brazilian Jui-Jitsu and Koykoshin Karate and I have been shooting handguns under supervision since I was 14.

If I were to chose option B would the Army help me brush up on my Martial Arts and Firearm skills more than Navy or would they be equal? I am still undecided between options A and B.

Its great that you have a desire to serve and protect your community and you nation. However I do want clarify some things about ages. First I would say the avergae age for getting hired as a police officer is like 25 to 35. 23 is actully on the younger end. If you do chose to be a security guard and go to the police academy and become a officer, don’t worry about being looked down on for being young and without military experience. The way you carry youself on the job will ear you respect. There will be some prior military guys that act like fools and young 21 year old guys with little job experience do really well because they know how to get along with people and do the police job well. It is not difficult to get into law enforcement without military background. Many have it, but not all. Also 23 is not too old for the military. Especially not the way the economy is, people are going into the military are much older now and other recruits will look up to your for guidance. Either of your plans is good so you should see where you can get started at first. If you are able to get hired on as a security guard and volunteer or even paid EMT, then do so. If those jobns aren;t available then speak to a recruiter about going into the military. If both were readily availalble, I would go to the police academy as this seems to be your ulitmate goal, even after the military. So why not just get started on it earlier. Either branch of the Army or Navy will help you brush up on firearms and martial arts. they do have military combatives. Its up to you though. If you want to learn, take the initative to learn and take extra classes.

i am in 9th grade and i am a 2nd degree black belt in taekwondo. I will be getting my 3rd degree soon and hopefully my 4th degree by the time i finish high school. I will also be a co-instrucor next year and will be opening my own program to teach underprivileged kids taekwondo.
Is this better than doing a school sport like basketball? i know that i will probably never get amazing at basketball and it will be a waste to quit taekwondo just to be on a school team. I dont even plan on being recruited or playing for college. The only reason i was considering basketball was that it appears on your class transcript. However i am getting a letter of recommendation from my taekwondo instructor and my counselor said he would mention it in his letter of recommendation. So am i making the right choice by staying with taekwondo? (i cant do both sports because they have VERY conflicting schedules)

I think you should stick with Taekwondo. Remember colleges look at the things you do outside of school too.

Do Universities care whether I am involved with sports inside or outside of school?
I have a 2nd degree black belt in taekwondo but my school does not offer any sport like that at school.(i am a girl so do not offer wrestling). I am really good at it and i hold some county and state titles and i plan to start teaching classes once i get my 3rd degree black belt. I am a freshman and i am also very involved in school. I am founder and co-president of one club at my school, i am in the youth action team club which works for the city, Unicef club, and i am looking to join more clubs once the chance becomes available. i am also part of my grades class council which is a part of ASB(my school doesnt let you take ASB until 11and 12th grade). I also have other volunteering experience in the past and i am hoping to become more involved in school(like as a mentor and ASB when the time comes). So do you think that it matters that i do a sport outside of school or not because i am really good at it and i know if i start another sport at school i will never be as good as i am in taekwondo. Also i am not looking for any athletic scholarships or recruiting. Oh yeah, i am also in all honors classes and last year i had a 4.0 and all A+’s on my report card ( school just started so i dont know my grades for this year yet). So basically….does it really matter?

Anything you do in or outside of school that you don’t get credit for is something schools might be interested in. So while you can certainly tell them about it, don’t expect it to do much for you. Martial arts are very common.
